DESCRIPTION OF THE STEP TRAINEESHIP PROVIDER

Justice in France is administered by a ministry, also called the Chancellerie, whose head is the Minister of Justice, the Garde des Sceaux. The Ministry comprises a General Secretariat, an Inspectorate General of Judicial Services and five directorates. It has several missions :
- preparation of laws and regulations in certain areas, such as family law, French nationality, civil justice and criminal justice, etc. ;
- management of the resources of the judiciary: personnel, equipment, buildings, IT, etc;
- taking charge of the populations entrusted to it by the judicial authority: juvenile offenders or those in danger and persons placed under judicial supervision;
- defining and implementing public policies in the field of justice: assistance to victims of crime, criminal policy, the fight against organised crime, access to the law and to justice, etc.

In order to fulfil these tasks, the European and International Affairs Department (DAEI), within the General Secretariat, includes a Comparative Law Office. It carries out comparative law studies and notes for the ministers' advisers and the directorates in support of reform projects or on current judicial issues. This office also administers the European network of legislative cooperation.
