DESCRIPTION OF THE STEP TRAINEESHIP PROVIDER

WWF Greece is an independent environmental non-governmental organization, member of the international
WWF, a global network of scientists, volunteers and citizens, active in Greece for almost 30 years. Our mission
is to stop the degradation of the natural environment, to protect biodiversity, to ensure the sustainable use
of renewable natural resources and to promote the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.
Wildfires work stream is a strategic and integral part of WWF Greece’s conservation programme. The
organization is the only Greek NGO that works systematically on a broad spectrum of related issues: from
policy interventions and proposals for forest fire prevention and spatial planning to alliances building among
local communities - firefighting volunteers and competent authorities and capacity building on fire prevention
and post-fire rehabilitation. In parallel, implementation of outreach and engagement campaigns built
awareness on sound fire prevention practices to general public, in hard affected areas by wildfires, such as
Ileia, Attica, Achaia, Chios, Cephalonia etc.
Currently, WWF Greece is implementing a project, aiming at enhancing transparency in the management of
state resources for the prevention and suppression of forest fires and promoting solutions for good
governance with the contribution of civil society.

TRAINEESHIP TASKS

Recently WWF Greece launched a pilot project for the implementation of prescribed burning in Chios island,
as a solid scientific method for the prevention of forest fires under certain strict conditions. The project aims
to enforce the efforts for forest fire prevention through scientific research and pilot implementation of
prescribed burning in several forest ecosystems. The final deliverable of the project is the preparation of
specific guidelines for end users in order to implement the method in a proper and sustainable way.
Prescribed burning is a solid scientific method for the prevention of forest fires that is already used in several
European countries such as Portugal, France, Italy, Spain and other countries with Mediterranean
characteristics such as California, South Africa, and Australia. All the above countries have already developed
specific legal provisions and texts (standards and strategies) for the implementation of prescribed burning. In
Greece, however, there is a legal vacuum regarding the implementation of prescribed burning as a scientific
method for the prevention of forest fires under certain strict conditions.
The trainee will be asked to undertake the following tasks:
1. Το investigate the description and use of prescribed burning in other countries and different legalsystems;
2. To conduct a stakeholders mapping: Which are the competent authorities? Which are their legal
obligations? Are there any special terms and conditions and certifications provided by virtue of law? etc.;
3. To conduct a survey and collect documentation for the legal use of prescribed burning (relevant laws,
strategies, guidelines) in different countries;
4. To conduct a comparative analysis of legal provisions and best practices in different countries;
5. To draft the basic requirements for a law proposal for the use of prescribed burning in Greece.
