DESCRIPTION OF THE STEP TRAINEESHIP PROVIDER

The Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) is a Turkish non-profit working to promote freedom of expression, freedom of the press and the right to information. At a time when crackdown on media freedoms in Turkey had reached an alarming peak following the post-2016 coup, MLSA was founded in 2017 to respond to an urgent yet growing need for going back to democracy and normalization.
We aim to provide a holistic response to threats to freedom of expression and the press by combining legal support and advocacy work for journalists regardless of their popularity level or ideology. Our core activities are combined with the following specific projects:

- Judicial monitoring program focused on freedom of expression trials against mainly journalists and, to a lesser degree, rights defenders, activists, academics, lawyers, politicians, social media users
- Human rights training for lawyers that defend journalists, activists, academics
professional journalism workshops for young and independent journalists, digital security workshops for journalists
- Creating of opportunities for jobless journalists to remain in the profession via commissioned articles
- Monitoring of internet censorship and speaking up for internet freedoms

All these serve the long-term goal of securing a professionally endowed and free media for an informed citizenry which will, in turn, push governments towards restoring democracy in Turkey.
